^® extra spacing

Marketo is adding a space between words and their superscripted registration marks or trademarks and I can't understand why. 

The HTML source reads for the first line: It&rsquo;s time to update your Helix<sup style="font-weight: normal;">&reg;</sup> guitar processor with 

However, in the preview this renders with a space between the word "Helix" and supercripted Reg mark. 

Has anyone had this and found a solution?

I have found that if I have a div around that content I see the extra space, and my work around is to add a <p> around the content and then it seems to take care of it.
