Lead source tracking

Lead source tracking

Hi,

We are promoting a webinar via different methods (Google AdWords, LinkedIn ads etc.)

I'm trying to track lead sources so I know which promotional campaigns work the best. This is the set up:

1. We have a WordPress webinar registration page sitting on our corporate website
2. That page has a "Register Now" button that when clicked leads to a blank Marketo landing page (imagine a white smaller pop-up window)
3. That Marketo landing page has a Marketo form that we use to capture registrations

If I were to use only a Marketo landing page for the sign ups, I’d use hidden fields in the Marketo form and parameters I’d add to the end of the landing page URL (?ref=LinkedInAd) for example. Now, this doesn't work since I’m giving the Wordpress URL (not the Marketo URL) to vendors.

Has anyone encountered a similar situation? Did you find a way to track the lead sources?

Thank you.

Re: Lead source tracking

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has found a good solution for this. We are battling the same issues. For now if the tracking is critical (ie we are paying for the traffic) we set up a unique for that tags the lead source specifically. If there is no budget assigned then we usually go with one single landing page and use UTM tracking to get the traffic sources to the page, the problem with this is that we can't see which channels are converting best in that scenario. There may be ways to set up your goals or funnels in your web anayltics system to track that though.

It would be great to hear if there is a way to get this type of tracking off of one single landing page / form.

Re: Lead source tracking

So, it seems like you need the parent page to pass the URL parameters through to the Marketo page. This might still be possible with Javascript (if a little advanced). You could put in those parameters in your Wordpress page, and then with Javascript, pass that value through by changing the Marketo link. Alternatively you could also place a cookie and alter the Marketo form to use the values from the cookie.

Either way, you'd probably need a clever Javascript developer for a little while to make it work.

Re: Lead source tracking

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your response. I have addedd a hidden field to the Marketo form and set "get the source" from a cookie. I set the name of the parametr as "ref".

Now, what exactly does the parent page code need to contain? In order to be able to track the source, if we use cookies, would we still need to edit the URL (meaning add the ref source code - such as ?ref=LinkedInAd to the end of teh URL) or would the source be extracted from the parent page itself?

Thank you!

Re: Lead source tracking

Hi Erik,

Can you recommend an expert in this area we can hire to get this implemented? I got on the phone our web developer and a Marketo customer support rep yesterday, yet they were still not able to work this out.

Thanks for your response and recommendation!

Re: Lead source tracking

Hi Suzanne:

You can check Marketo's Launchpoint for a list of Marketo partners.

Also, coincidentally, our B2B technology agency Yesler is one of those partners doing marketing automation implementation for our clients, among other services. 🙂

Re: Lead source tracking

Hmm. Unfortunately I don't know of one, but maybe Support could refer you to our services team? I think someone who was good with cookies and Javascript could figure it out.

Re: Lead source tracking

I don't understand why the landing page wasn't built (or rebuilt) in Marketo initially. I would rebuild the page in Marketo and append the landing page URL with the following based on where you are advertising:

?source=PPClinkedin
?source=PPCAdWords
