I could have sworn it was possible to set up a channel in a such a way that leads can move backwards and forwards through progression status? Am I crazy?

Hey Jim, by default they're only supposed to move one direction through progression statuses. That said, you can "trick" them into moving around by putting all of the progression statuses at the same number in the admin section.
