How Marketo deals with merged lead email addresses

I've gone through the Community documentation, and I may be missing something, but I can't seem to find what would happen in this specific case:

Lead 1 is John Smith with email address john.smith@email.com.

Lead 2 is John Smith with email address john.smith@company.com.

The leads are merged, with the second record being the one selected for data to keep.

If John Smith comes to another LP with a Marketo form, for example, and enters john.smith@email.com as his email address, what happens? Does Marketo remember the merge? Is a new Lead created?

Hi Hobie,

A new lead will be created. The only place where Marketo will remember the email address is in the durable unsubscribe list (where all unsubscribe emails are kept), but this only remember the email address, not the lead.
