How does one set a custom type for a custom field?

When adding a custom field to a lead record, how does one set a custom type (e.g., Boolean) that is not part of the predefined list?

It's "Checkbox"

You can't define new "custom" types arbitrarially (that would be really complex), but I'm not sure Boolean isn't on the list, that seems weird to me. I'll look into it.
