Help! Restructuring SFDC Campaign Hierarchy

I'm restructuring my SFDC campaign hierarchy and need help to make sure I don't break the current Campaigns or Marketo Programs.

Because of inconsistencies in our SFDC campaign hierarchy and our Marketo instance, reporting on the success of different types of programs is becoming next to impossible. So, I've taken on a project to restructure our campaign hierarchy to improve reporting and success attribution for different types of marketing programs. I'd like to get leads classified consistently moving forward, and ideally retroactively but I know this might be asking a lot.

In both our SFDC and Marketo instance, some Campaign Types and Channels (respectively) are missing from either one system or another, and some are duplicative (for example, in Marketo we have a Channel called 'Webinar' with its own set of Progression Stages and another called 'Webinar - New Process' with a different set of Progression Stages.) So I'm essentially starting from scratch and listing out all of the Campaign Types & Channels that I want in SFDC & Marketo (again, respectively). But due to the duplication and missing types, mapping my new values to the old values is going to be problematic.

Before I get started, I have a million questions:

1. I'm going to begin by creating a fresh set of Campaign Types/Program Channels.
Where does it make sense to do this first? Should I clean up the Campaign Types in SFDC or should I clean up the Program Channels in Marketo first? Which direction would this be easier to sync?
If I delete a Channel in Marketo, what happens to the leads in the Programs associated with that Channel - do they become associated with no Channel at all?
If I delete a Channel in Marketo how does it affect the Members of the SFDC Campaign that is synced with a Marketo Program in that Channel?
Do I create the new Channel and map all existing Programs BEFORE deleting the old Channel?

I know that if I delete a Campaign Type in SFDC, I will be prompted to map existing campaigns to a new Campaign Type - does Marketo offer similar functionality? Will it totally mess up my legacy Programs if I start changing the Channels?

2. For each Campaign Type/Program Channel, I'm going to clean up the Member Statuses/Progression Stages.
Marketo has a disclaimer that if I amend the Progression Stages for a Channel that it will change the Progression Stage of the prospect in the Programs associated with that Channel. Did I read that right? What will be the effect on leads that have already been synced to a Campaign in SFDC?

As you can see, I just want to anticipate any issues with mapping new campaign types and member statuses before I get started. Would rather not break my system.

I would really appreciate any help from someone who has undertaken a similar project before!

Re: Help! Restructuring SFDC Campaign Hierarchy

Nevermind! I seem to have found the answers to most of my questions in the support articles.

I can't delete channels or update the channels for programs that currently contain members. So I can only update Campaign Types etc. moving forward.
