Exporting double-byte character set -- garbled characters

Can't get any hits in KB or forums for "double byte" (any variation), so posting this question:

Our team occasionally needs to export a Marketo smart list that contains double-byte characters. The character set is correct in Marketo. And in most cases, the double-byte characters come through correctly when the export is opened in Excel. But some characters are garbled, and we can't detect where the issue is occurring and how to solve it. Any advice?

Thanks!

To be clear, are you exporting as CSV, or as Excel-flavored CSV?

(Excel-flavored has a UTF-8 BOM.  CSV does not.)

Re: Exporting double-byte character set -- garbled characters

After some travel delays and timezone differences, I was able to catch up with the Asia team. Indeed, choosing the "Windows Excel 2007" format was the key. I had thought they'd tried all the options, but evidently the missed this at the bottom of the Format selection list. Thanks for pointing us in the right direction.

OK, thanks for the update. What I suspected.

Re: Exporting double-byte character set -- garbled characters

Also, the reason "double-byte" wouldn't come up in a search -- well, until now -- is that you're probably talking about both double and triple-byte storage in UTF8, so it's easier to just talk about "Unicode" or "UTF8" or "UTF16".
