Can I set up an AB test for an email that is an event type? I want to send one email with a subject line test.

You should create a local asset for Email Send.

Alternatively, you can use the Champion on the Email by right clicking and saying "New Test". The difference is you can only use this in a Trigger Campaign.

Hi Lindsay, we've had problems with Email Programs in the past that weren't resolved by Marketo so I'm personally very hesitant to use them. My standard workaround for testing subject lines is described below. 

I create two separate emails (without the A/B test), then create a batch campaign that has a send where the flow step uses the choice "Random sample is 50%" and it sends one of the emails, and the default option is the other email. I like this option because it keeps the reporting on the two emails forever whereas the reporting shown in champion/challenger tests will disappear once you choose a champion.
