Email Reporting Across Repeat Sends

Marketo's email reporting summarized performance across unique assets and campaigns per contact, rather than per individual send of that asset or campaign. For example, if we send the same email asset through the same campaign 5 separate times to the same 50k contacts, Marketo reports 50k emails sent, rather than 250k. In most cases, you can just clone the sending campaign or email asset and rename it to differentiate performance between sends.

 

However, we're planning to create an email with dynamically populated content and send it on a recurring basis (daily or weekly) to the same audience. The email asset's content changes for each send since it is being populated dynamically via formatted JSON content in a lead record, however the specific asset in Marketo will stay the same. We need to differentiate reporting by each specific send to get an accurate measure of how the program is actually performing.

 

Cloning out email assets and campaigns via API would quickly become very asset heavy as the program ages, so we're looking for an alternate way to track email performance on a per send level.

 

How would you recommend doing so?

1)  In most cases, you can just clone the sending campaign or email asset and rename it to differentiate performance between sends.

A) Marketo uses Email ID; not naming convention for uniqueness or reports. Cloning and renaming achieves this through creating a new asset with a different ID.

 

2) Cloning out email assets and campaigns via API would quickly become very asset heavy as the program ages, so we're looking for an alternate way to track email performance on a per send level.

A) Just clone the email and swap out references and point to the new Email.  You can unapprove the old email(s).
