Do you measure opportunity amount on create date or close date?

When you look at a chart of opps created in 2012, does it show measurements from the opportunities' create dates or close dates?

One of these opps was created in November for $7,500 and was later closed-won for $11,376. So obviously the closed booking value would be $11,376, but what should the original opp be valued at? In other words, if we create a chart to show how much opportunity was created in November, should we value the opp at $7,500 or $11,376?
