Creating new lead status values

Is there a process for creating new data values? We want to add some new lead status values, when setting up smart campaigns there is a drop down list of options. Do we need to set up the new value somewhere or can we just type it in the box even though it's not in the drop down menu?

Just be careful if this is a field that is synced with your CRM system, because you may need to add a picklist value in your CRM system.

You may type any value in the box (even ones that are not in the drop down menu)
