Contact list in Marketo but not Salesforce

Is there a way to create a marketing list in Marketo that won't sync to Salesforce?

We used to have some lists in Robly that weren't in our Salesforce database and we would like to be able to market to them through Marketo without creating leads in Salesforce. 

The list I want is in Salesforce but as a custom object not a lead, they are referral sources of ours and I want to be able to send emails to them. I created a list in Marketo and it made it a lead in Salesforce.

Not entirely sure what you mean. If the SFDC Custom Object isn't synced to Marketo, then you need to do that first.

If you are asking about holding back leads from SFDC, there are tons of threads on that. You can use SFDC Type=Empty to find Marketo only.
