Communication Limits Per 7 Days and Time of Day Constraints

Hi Community,

I have questions about Marketo's native communication limits feature.

When selecting "Per 7 Days", is that a rolling 7 days? Does it run Monday through Sunday and then "reset" to allow more communications?

Let's say it's a rolling 7 days and the following scenario is in place:
1. I send an email at 8am Thursday.
2. I will send another email the following Thursday at 7am.
Will the second email be impacted?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Communication Limits Per 7 Days and Time of Day Constraints

The communication limits are based on calendar day so I'm fairly sure that your second mail wouldn't be blocked:

Thurs     Fri           Sat          Sun        Mon      Tue        Wed      Thurs
day1      day2        day3        day4       day5     day6       day7

I'll ask a colleague to confirm

Re: Communication Limits Per 7 Days and Time of Day Constraints

Hi Whitney,

I just filed a ticket with Support about this. Not too happy with how these limits actually work in Marketo.

"...the limits are computed based on calendar days, and not on a rolling basis, so the limits do not fully elapse until completion of the following 7 days at 12:01AM."

So if you have a nurture program that runs once per week and a communciation limit of 1 email per 7 days, the lead would only get the nurture email once every other week (assuming no other email sends).

This seems non-intuitive for the average marketer.

Would like to hear other experiences and opinions out there.

Thanks,
Rachelle

Calrification

The communication limits are calculated per calendar day, so basically the email are put into day buckets.  A check for emails in a week would check the last 7 days.  So if the email was sent any time on the 17th the week calculation would be as follows:

Date Day Day Count Week Count
17-Apr 1 1 1
18-Apr 2 0 1
19-Apr 3 0 1
20-Apr 4 0 1
21-Apr 5 0 1
22-Apr 6 0 1
23-Apr 7 0 1
24-Apr 8

So email would be able to received starting midnight on the 24th.

So, basically it is really not a exact 7 days from the time of send of last email. It is waiting till the end of 7th calendar day to reset the communication limits.

Not very intuitive !!

Re: Communication Limits Per 7 Days and Time of Day Constraints

Harjot,

Marketo pushed through a patch in mid-May 2014  so that it works the way it is supposed to. Records should be eligible to receive an email on Tuesday if you last emailed them last Tuesday. Instead of you emailed them on Tuesday, they would only be eligible on Wednesday at midnight. Hopefully that makes sense. 😃

Thanks,

Re: Communication Limits Per 7 Days and Time of Day Constraints

There absolutely needs to be an option for "one per week" to allow mailing less than 7 days apart. For us it would be much more valuable to limit sends to once per week as opposed to a rolling 7 days.

Should be easy to incorporate into the limits feature.

Thanks
