Adding metadata to content files?

We'd like to be able to add metadata (egs tags / keywords / categories) to the content files (e.g. PDFs) that we're uploading in Marketo beyond the default ones that are added (I.e date uploaded and file format), so we can use this meta data to tag the content and create a searchable library on our site.

Is it possible to add metadata to uploaded content files, or if not, are there any "add-ins" or APIs or custom coding functionality that would allow us to create this?

I've seen there is a SOAP API to allow extra information to be added to leads, would there be sometime similar we could use to add extra information to content uploads?

Currently there is no metadata for uploaded files. In fairness it could be as simple as a new field of type text or even string. 

That is a very interesting suggestion for "Ideas" section.
