What are the advantages of importing through Marketo instead of SFDC?

Hello, we are both Marketo and Salesforce customers and have been importing directly into Salesforce for a very long time. We have heard that the best practice is to import through Marketo first, and then have it transfer all the new leads to Salesforce.

Does anyone have experience with both of these methods that can give us some more details?
