Vibes Launchpoint Integration: Managing phone number updates

My client has successfully connected Vibes with Marketo using the launchpoint integration. However, we have run into an issue, and support at Vibes and Marketo are both a little stumped. 

 

Background

Today, a person fills out a membership application, which includes their mobile number. This is a custom process and the data flows directly into SFDC, which syncs to Marketo. Assuming the person's membership is approved, they then receive credentials to log in and can modify their information, including their phone number. 

 

Desired behavior

When a person modifies their information and updates their phone number, we need to subscribe this new number to the appropriate Vibes list.

 

Issues

We have had a number of issues testing this. Here are the scenarios we have attempted after a person changes their phone number:

  • If we attempt to subscribe or unsubscribe the person (with new number) to the Vibes list, the flow step skips and gives a 'suggestion,' which says "Lead should have a mobile number and should not be currently subscribed."
  • Sometimes in trying to unsubscribe the person, the flow step just doesn't even happen. 
  • We CAN send an SMS via flow step in Marketo to a person regardless of their Vibes list subscription status (which is expected behavior, according to Vibes support -- just not desired, for a number of reasons). 

It almost seems like we need a way to hold back a phone number change, unsubscribe the current number from the Vibes list, allow the number to change, then resubscribe the new number to the Vibes list. However, not sure how this would be possible as phone number is managed by users themselves and then synced to Marketo via SFDC.

 

Has anyone configured a successful re-subscribe to Vibes list process for a person's new phone number if they were already subscribed to a Vibes list? What is the key to unlock the secret?
