validating multi-select field

I have a multi-select pick list consisting of 5 values. I have applied the "is required" setting, however there seems to be an issue validating this field. If the first field is one of the options selected - the form not will submit. This appears to be a design flaw - is there a workaround or fix for this issue?

The typical single-select pick list requires a top value such as "please choose one" which won't allow a submission.  It might look awkward but I'd add this as the top value in the picklist and see if that solves the problem.
