tracking content syndication programs - by media outlet and by content asset?

We are doing a large content syndication program where we put whitepapers and other content on websites like IDG.

I would like to be able to track both how each media outlet is doing and then how each content piece within the media outlet is doing.

This was asked in January, but the answer was a solution that was specific to SFDC. We do not have SFDC unfortunately.

We have it set up so the orginal lead source is "online advertising" and then the lead source detail is the name of the media outlet "2013 IDG" or "2013 CBSi". We currently have 12 media outlets for 12 programs.

Any ideas on how to track the success of content?

Note that the talk about tracking content at the Marketo Summit that just took place talked about tracking content based on emails. See the slide below.

Re: tracking content syndication programs - by media outlet and by content asset?

Set up a program for each content outlet, create a new channel for Content Syndication and have the progression statuses match that of the names of your collateral - or - create a custom field on the Lead to hold the name of the piece of collateral and use a progression status of "Converted".

Either way, upload your list to the program corresponding to the content outlet and set your progression status accordingly. This should allow you to get effectiveness by program and also by content download.

Re: tracking content syndication programs - by media outlet and by content asset?

We have decided to go with the - add two custom fields to the lead option. I will be able to track the success of different pieces of content. In addition, we will be able to sync it with our CRM system so that inside sales can see "first content downloaded" and "last content downloaded" as well.

Thank you very much for the help!
