Is it possible to upload a list of contacts into Marketo and send an email to that list, without these contacts being added to the Marketo lead database?

I do not think so. You can upload a list and then delete it.

Thanks for this very helpful answer. Is it possible to ensure that once this list is added to the Marketo database it is not then synced to Salesforce?

That is not possible whereas you can filter them out afterwards.

Zoe Beath, I would suggest you create a new page and form with just your company profile and required field and in the smart campaign don't add the SYNC to SFDC trigger.
