This is an absolute must and saves you headaches down the line of having to work with Support to remap fields on Marketo backend. Make sure your CRM team understands a custom field on the lead object in Salesforce should be mapped to a contact field on the contact object so that data is carried over when a conversion occurs. I've seen too often where duplicate fields are created in Marketo, one for Lead and one for Contact.
It certainly will reduce a lot of headache :-). It is always important that all the teams, CRM, Marketing and Sales understand how these fields are important and what purpose they are solving.
