Managing Leads that use Generic Company Emails

I'm curious how people manage leads where two contacts use the same, generic email address.  For example:

- Jane Doe, CEO - admin@domain.com
- John Smith, Marketing Director - admin@domain.com

Clearly these are two separate people with different job titles and information, but they are using the same email address.

Would the best practice be to merge these two accounts, anyway, and keep the one that you think is going to be the more engaged lead?

Hey Karen,

For us, I would delete the email address (since it is no good anways) and leave them as two separate records. Assuming that they have a phone number. Event if they don't, you can always update the record with their general number, or using any tools like RainKing or Data.com that you may have.

Why not keep both emails as they are - and end up sending them two emails, one as "Dear Jane" and the other as "Dear John"?

In other words, what's the risk of doing nothing?
