Looking for Best Practice - client records

Looking for a best practice as it relates to client records and contact status?  Leave empty? Flag as client?

In a Status field, it is generally better to have a value than to leave it blank.  Having a value in the field means that it was evaluated and the value intentionally set.  If it is blank, it could mean the record has not been evaluated.  We ensure this by making our Status field a required field.
