How do I resubscribe duplicate leads?

So I know that Marketo has durable unsubscribe for duplicate leads. 

But do they have durable resubscibe?  I'm finding that is not the case.  If I try to opt in someone for communication, a dup of their record unsubscribes them again. 

Obviously, we need to get rid of the duplicates, but in the meantime, does anyone have experience with resubscribing dups?

I created a marketo form on our website so someone can fill it out.  the form corresponds to the unsubscribe field.  The problem is that if there are any dups of that lead, the unsubscribe dup reverts the change.
