We still use progression statuses in Email Programs. We made a separate channel and tagged to that. Then we have the normal Sent, Open, Click, etc smart campaigns to change progression (you can always backfill this now if the email has already run). Also, you don't have to just view the dashboard, you can select the Summary view and see the numbers more clearly.
If you just are curious and want one-off queries, just create a smart list. Ex: for opens you would filter on opened email (select email) and if you wanted to know just for a particular test you can add that criteria in the filter.
