I set up an email performance . The expectation is to understand how leads/contacts at different buying stages (with different status) engaged with the email - opened, clicked and unsubscribed.
Is Marketo showing their current status? My guess is it is. Is there a way to look at them retroactively, i.e. their status when they actually received the email and
their performance then?

This is not feasible directly, but you can create multiple reports, one for each status. You will have to add a smart list for each status in each report.
BtW, the new email Insight will make this much easier. You will have to create a segmentation based on lead status and you will be able to easily use it in email reports as filters or as a grouping field.
