Known lead has an email address in the system so you can market to them.

Hi there,

I'm not sure this is exactly right.  (And I do know that Marketo needs to improve on some of their naming conventions).

If you're looking at something like the graph below, a known lead is any lead record you have in your database, regardless of whether or not they have an email, while Anonymous Leads are those individiuals who have been to your site, have a cookie, but have not filled out a form:

You can check it by looking at your System Smart List of "All Leads"...it will match what your "known leads" shows.

Some people also talk about "known" leads as when an individual gets cookied in the system by clicking a link in an email or filling out a form, thus becoming known in their web behaviour.  I think this is the terminology that needs to be changed/updated by Marketo.
