Changing Field Once In Use

Is there any possible way to change a field type once it's already in use?

We have a comments field on a survey we send out that I currently have set as a String but it appears that does not allow enough characters so I'd like to change it to a text in order to allow a few more characters.  

I hate to create a new field and switch it out becuase there are a lot of back end items tied to this which would make switching to a new field quite an ordeal.

Any suggestions?

In Marketo, you cannot change the field type of a field that is in use by smart campaigns, lists, etc. But in SFDC you can. Just make sure you have researched all of the implications of doing so.
