While it's not what you asked, I would generally advise people to more or less ignore industry averages. Every company is different, and your open and click rates are so closely tied to your lead generation and segmentation strategies that it's pretty pointless to compare yourself to other companies, to be honest.
For example, if you double-opt-in all new leads then your open and click rates will be much higher than if you didn't, but your list will be smaller. There are solid and/or business reasons why you might do this (or not do it). So my advice would be to continually try to improve, but don't bother trying to hit some arbitrary industry benchmark that is totally different to your situation.
