I don't know if you would want to use the acquistion program that way, especially if you have been using it in the past to track how leads came to you.
What you could do is set the "success" for your program to be one of your progession steps such as "Download". Then you can see how successful a program was, and report on it fairly easy.

I agree with Taylor, you will want to use Program Statuses marked as Successes to denote this. Acquisition Program really should not change because it is the genesis of the Lead.
In addition, Marketo's multi-touch attribution system is based on Program Successes.
