Building marketing emails: Marketo builder or third-party? Which works best for you?

I've recently joined a small email team that uses the Marketo builder with a template that needs a serious redesign. In the last 2 months I have found the native builder to be limiting and our current template prone to error. I am now exploring options for a new template and would love to know what tools/processes have worked well for your teams. I've also just received approval to begin using Email on Acid, which I think will be helpful!


In my past, building emails in and pasting code into any automation platform worked very well for a low-volume email strategy. However, I can see building in a third-party becoming a potential burden with higher volume, especially if we decide we want to leverage any Marketo features like snippets and dynamic content. 


What has worked best for you and your teams? Do you recommend one approach over the other?
