We set up a subscription preference center http://info.smg.com/preferences.html and then build out each of the preferences as a yes no that is added to our email send programs and/or our email list for types of emails.
When a new lead is added to the database, we automatically subscribe them to everything. At the bottom of all our emails, we have a link for people to update their settings.
