Re: A new useful smart list - uncorrect/empty lead sources

Hi Marina,

I have two questions:

1) Is there a document explaining what the different lead sources mean in detail - with examples? Our working student has been doing a web research and has been creating a lot of contacts since spring. What kind of lead source is this? Operational? Telemarketing?

2) What kind of procedure do you propose to add the lead source? I think we have a special case for our region as the original lead source for nearly all my leads is: contact. For the moment, I open the lead in Marketo, look at the activity log, check back with SF, who created the lead and then add the lead source. This will take ages for 1800 leads. I will add the lead source to these contacts in SF - ok? Thanks!

Dear Ull,

To answer your questions;

1) Is there a document explaining what the different lead sources mean in detail - with examples? Our working student has been doing a web research and has been creating a lot of contacts since spring. What kind of lead source is this? Operational? Telemarketing? => We don't have this document. For your case (new contacts in Spring), Operational are only for Marketo programs managed at the admin part, so please don't use this lead source. But yes, telemarketing is the correct one I think in this case.

=> I understand this is a lot to do to complete this lead source. You should start by looking at group of leads (i.e. mass-creation you have done in the past by looking at creation date for exemple - I sent you an email about that). You then select the concerned leads, click on Lead actions / Marketing / Change Data Value / Change lead source to "XX". Like this you can update the lead source by group of leads. Then for the others, it is right that it an individual update to do.

Re: A new useful smart list - uncorrect/empty lead sources

Hi Marina, in Salesforce when creating a new lead there is no option to add lead source. Once assigned to sales, that field remains locked. In this case what I have to do is create the lead in salesforce, wait for the lead to replicate into Marketo, and then update the lead source in Marketo. Is this correct? It seems like a lot of steps and of course I might not always remember to do so!!!

Thanks, Victoria

Re: A new useful smart list - uncorrect/empty lead sources

Hi Victoria,

Yes you're right, this is the case for now. But DSI is currently working on a new SFDC evolution to let the field editable by marketing and sales. It should be done very soon.

I will keep you posted.

Thanks.

Re: A new useful smart list - uncorrect/empty lead sources

Dear all,

Concerning this data enrichment actions on the lead sourcce of all leads/contacts created since January 2016, you haven't get the detailed definitions of each lead source. I am sorry about that.

Just wanted quickly tell you PLEASE DON'T USE the lead source "Nurture" since we haven't yet launched any nurturing program at Lectra.

The lead source mustn't not be confused with the action you want to apply to this lead/contact.

The lead source is the way you have captured the lead/contact. Example: Telemarketing, done internally or via external agency.

Re: A new useful smart list - uncorrect/empty lead sources

Hi all,

We have updated empty lead source for all leads like described below:

- Leads created before 01/01/2016 => "n/c"

- Leads created between 01/01/2016 and today => "To update"

We have updated smart list filters ("ADMIN_Lead source incorrect" in the "ADMIN_Useful Smart List" folder). So now you will find in this smart list all the incorrect values for lead source and all the "To update" values.

All our forms have been updated this summer and now contains the lead source field automatically filled in with the right lead source ("web contact" for a contact us form, "IATC" for an IATC event form, ...) if the lead source is empty. If the lead source is not empty, Marketo will keep the previous data.

So, please can you clean all the uncorrect values and then check regularly the "ADMIN_Lead source incorrect" smart list to clean the database?
Thanks!

Re: A new useful smart list - uncorrect/empty lead sources

Dear all,

Good news!!!  From the 7.500 lead sources uncorrect or empty we observed mid July, thanks to Maylys's action these last days, we have now 'only' 1.400 leads sources to complete.

See the list here: Login | Marketo

Reminders:

  • This 'cleansing' action concerns the leads/contacts created in Marketo since January 2016
  • The value of the lead sources to complete is 'To update' or empty
  • All our forms have been updated this summer and now contains the lead source field automatically filled in with the right lead source ("web contact" for a contact us form, "IATC" for an IATC event form, ...) if the lead source is empty. If the lead source is not empty, Marketo will keep the previous data.

Maylys already exchanged with some of you on that topic but she can still help you to enrich this data that will be useful to analyze the source of the lead captured in 2016.

We also recommend you to regularly check the smart list  and not to forget it, please put that action in your 2017 data management plan.

Important: when you add an email address in a Salesforce contact page, this contact is automatically created in Marketo but the systems don't know the source of the contact so in the case of a Salesforce contact created before January 1st, 2016, you must go to Marketo and change the lead source to 'n/c'.
