"Sales Owner" Fields not syncing from CRM

As is a common practice, we do most of our segmentation for email campaigns with dynamic content using the "Sales Owner" fields in Marketo. Recently I have been noticing some data errors where the Sales Owner fields in Marketo do not match what they should be in our CRM (Salesforce). We want to be as accurate as possible when sending marketing emails to leads and prospects so that the proper sales rep is getting the responses etc.

Salesforce only really has fields for the owner's full name and is not segmented into first and last like it is in Marketo. I was under the impression that the Sales Owner fields in Marketo just look at the owner's user profile in the CRM and map the fields automatically from there. Is there a way for us to manually map these fields or another way to fix this error? Or are we better off creating a new custom field in SF to sync to Marketo and segmenting off that?
