Question about Bounce Reason 554

We had a lead fill out a form, which triggered an automatic follow-up email. However, the follow-up email bounced, and this is the note that was in the lead's Marketo activity:

554- 554 Unfortunately your access to this mail system has been rejected due to the sending MTA's poor reputation and e-mail hygiene on the Internet. Please reference the following URL for more information: http://www.senderbase.org/search?searchString=199.15.215.79

Anyone have more information on this?

Re: Question about Bounce Reason 554

While the recipient's server is providing a generic link to SenderBase, I doubt it's the SB rating that's causing the error. This IP is okay in SB (at least as of this moment) so it's local rules applied by the mail admin that result in SMTP-level rejection.

It's typical for local rulesets to not be divulged to the public -- this makes it harder for spammers to work around them. So you'll have to apply the standard best practices for deliverability. It's also possible that the operative rule here is Reject all email from IPs registered to Marketo, which isn't something you can fix.

If you see errors from a wide range of recipients, that usually means the Marketo IP actually has been publicly blacklisted, and you should open a support case so you can be moved as they mitigate the issue.
