Keep certain leads from ever syncing with Salesforce

Calling all Marketo/Salesforce experts! 

We have certain types of customer leads that we never want to be synced/created as leads in Salesforce. I can identify them in Marketo by a custom True/False field we have created for "Customer". Currently, in every single campaign we have that syncs and creates leads (such as when a form is filled out), we add to the smartlist to exclude anyone where "Customer" = True. 

Is there a Universal way that we can keep these leads from syncing? Somewhere in the backend that says when "Customer" = true, do not sync with salesforce? We're trying to figure out ways to make our integration more efficient so that we can expand our campaigns and programs, without worrying that our customers will be created as prospect leads. 

If anyone else has any thoughts on this topic, please share!

Hi Lauren,

I believe that if you add an option to the Salesforce Sync flow action of your campaigns that is something like:

If "Customer" is "true"

Assign to "--Do Nothing--"

Make sure to add that as choice #1 in the list  of SF Sync options. The object executes until it finds an option that fits the description, then stops. So if the "Customer" is "true" option is the first one and they happen to be a customer they will match the first option and will not be synced  to Salesforce.

Thanks for the reply, Caleb. I'm really looking for something that will be a one-time thing in admin or some other setup feature to keep these leads from syncing - not something we have to do in the flow steps for each campaign. We're currently tackling this on a campaign by campaign basis using choices in flow steps or ammending smart lists, but it gets hairy since we have so many programs and campaigns.

Lauren, there isn't a global setting like this.  Two solutions here:

1) Replace every campaign-level sync with a global sync that excludes customers.  Depending on your set up, this might be based on lead score, recent activity, or just anyone who isn't a customer.  Note also anyone in a Marketo Program will be synced to Salesforce if the Salesforce Campaign is synced to the Program.  

2) Sync these customers to Salesforce and place them somewhere that won't impact things in Salesforce.  This is far simpler to implement, and a more common choice.  You might assign them to a specific lead owner (such as your Marketo Sync account), change their status to "customer", or anything else that will clearly communicate they shouldn't be touched by Sales.
