External URL in Landing Page Tracking

Hello,

I have a Marketo Landing page and within the body copy is an external URL. I would like to set up a smart campaign that when someone clicks this link on the landing page, the person is added to a specific SFDC campaign; however, when I attempt to set this up in the smart list, it says the external URL is not valid. I have done the same thing with an email (clicks external link in email) and it worked fine. The issue is clicks link in web page.

Does anyone have a solution, or knows of a successful way to go about this?

Thanks!

Danielle

Re: External URL in Landing Page Tracking

Hi Danielle,

Do you have a lead that has clicked this link?  If so, it's best to look at the lead record and see what url value is getting logged.  The trigger is going to look at the Clicked Link activity and the value stored there, so if it's storing www.google.com and you're trying to enter http://www.google.com in the trigger it's not going to work.

You could also create yourself as a test lead by filling out a form on your page and then clicking the link and looking at your activity history.

Yeah, I will look into why the auto-suggest isn't better here, but try enter a few characters of your link without the "http://www." and it should probably appear in the list. Sometimes if you type http://www.marketo.com it will actually be in the database as www.marketo.com/ which isn't very intuitive.

From my personal experience I have noticed that in some cases it can take a while before the link is added. Click it a couple of times, wait an hour and then it should appear.

Agree - it can sometime take 1-2 hours for the page to appear among the suggested pages.  That's been our experience.  And BTW, you don't need to wait for a lead to click on it - you can do this yourself (to have Marketo indexed the URL).  We do this all of the time for any new content we post on our external website.
