Engagement Program Help (regarding skipping over emails)

Hello,

Hopefully this question is pretty straightforward.

I have a engagement program setup currently:

  • 08 - Example Email
  • 09 - Example Email
  • 10 - Example Email

Now, all the members have already received Email 08, which is fine. Email 09, however, I only want some members of the default nurture to receive as this email has also been sent out as part of a separate campaign. I want the rest of the members to skip over Email 09 and go straight to 10.

Is this possible? If so, how does one go about doing this? Keep in mind, each of the above emails is inside of a Program, hopefully that makes things easier?

Thanks!

- Malik

Re: Engagement Program Help (regarding skipping over emails)

Hi Malik,

If the 9th email has already been sent to leads from some other source then they will not receive it through the engagement program.  Marketo's engagement programs will not send content to a lead that has already received that content from any other source in Marketo.

If the leads you want to block from receiving the email are those that have already received it before then the program will do that automatically.  Is this the case?

Re: Engagement Program Help (regarding skipping over emails)

Ah I got you, but what if the email has been cloned and added to the Engagement program, then it's treated as a separate email, correct?

The email/program was cloned because the email needs to be tweaked slightly, in this case, I believe it would qualify as a new piece of content technically.

Is there any other way to let Marketo know not to send email to X amount of people, perhaps through the "add to engagement" campaign nested in the program?

Malik,

You are correct.  If you cloned the program, then the system sees that as a new email and will send it.

Regarding your second question:

If you add a program to the engagement program, and add people to the membership of the program (using a change program status), when the engagement program evaluates this program, it will skip the people who are already a member of the program, and they will move on to the next piece of content.

Hope this helps!

Re: Engagement Program Help (regarding skipping over emails)

if you use the Program system, then you can use the kickoff campaign's smart list to add criteria to prevent it from going out to some people. The people you exclude will then receive Email 10 at the next cadence. They will not "skip" over Email 9.

John Clark - i thought that if the lead received Email 8 OUTSIDE the engagement previously, it would still receive Email 8 if it also qualified to receive it in the Engagement. Has this changed?

Re: Engagement Program Help (regarding skipping over emails)

Hi Josh,

If you place an email directly into a stream, and a lead has received that email before from any source, then the engagement program won't send it again. However, if it's a program/smart campaign sitting in the stream, and the email is sent as a result of the lead being handed over to that program/smart campaign through a cast, then it's not technically the engagement program sending the email, and it would get sent again.

Re: Engagement Program Help (regarding skipping over emails)

Hey guys,

So I'm still kind of confused on how to do this.

All the emails being sent out in my Engagement Program are in individual programs. I want some leads to get the next email, while other leads skip the program altogether and just move onto the next program/email.

Can I control this via the Nested "add to engagement" campaign that is required for all programs that are added to streams?

Thanks!
