DKIM Settings for Sending on behalf of Partner or Client Domain

When sending emails on behalf of clients or partners, what is a good process for configuring the DKIM settings to optimize deliverability on their behalf? Do we need to work with the client's IT department to create a DNS entry within their web hosting platform?

I have read a lot about setting up DKIM for a single domain that you own and are hosting. But what about for clients who have approved you to send on their behalf using their domain?

Do we need to work with the client's IT department to create a DNS entry within their web hosting platform?

Absolutely.  If you're sending on behalf of example.net, the record is <selector>_domainkey.example.net in their DNS zone.

Also note you should ask Support for a different selector than the default m1 in this case, because if the client uses Marketo themselves or may in the future, you should give them the right to use the default and your Marketo uses a custom one like m1parsell.

Ok, thanks Sanford!

So everything would stay the same for DKIM setup except the selector which Marketo can set up to be different than the default selector?

Have you ever worked with Marketo to get a different selector? I have had a poor experience when reaching out to them for DKIM support.

Thanks!

You have to be specific in what you want. Ask for it to be routed to Deliverability and you may want your AM to call up the Delivery/IT Ops team.

They may also give you a different public key (which is fine, that just goes into the DNS TXT record).

I haven't had to do this but just keep hammering away at all your contacts and it'll be done.

Like Josh says, anyone outside of the SMTP team proper likely has no idea how DKIM works.
