Are unsubscribed leads that get deleted recognized as unsubscribed if they re-enter the database?

I believe the answer is yes, but I want to confirm that Marketo has such a thing as "smart unsubscribe", mentioned in the 4th comment of below post.

If true, then would there be a reason to ever keep unsubscribed leads (i.e., non-customers) in the Marketo database?

Re: Are unsubscribed leads that get deleted recognized as unsubscribed if they re-enter the database?

Hi Jeff

We have what is called Durable Unsubscribe where if a lead is re-created and has previously unsubscribed then the new lead will be unsubscribed.

They must then opt-in to re-subscribe.

Please see the following Article: https://community.marketo.com/MarketoResource?id=kA650000000GxXxCAK

Just to note and agree with Josh, just beauce they unsubscribe is not the only item you should look when deciding to remove a lead. There  is alot of valuable information in the dehavioral data. Also a Lead may re-subscribe via the actions listed in the above article.

Thanks
Damien

Jeff,

This is correct. Unless the lead re-enters with an opt in at that time, Marketo won't send them another email on the back end. But I'm not so sure it will appear this way on the actual lead.

You can remove unsubscribes. But I would keep the "active" ones in for awhile because people may unsub for awhile and still visit the site. They may still want to enter. If you remove them from Marketo, you lose their behavioral data.

Awesome. And that makes sense about keeping active leads in, even if they are unsubscribed. Thank you both for clarifying.
