Duplicate Lead Created in Marketo

Issue


A lead has the same email address as another lead, but it was not deduplicated, or Marketo did not update the existing lead with the same email address.

 

 


Solution


The lead was not created via one of the areas below (e.g. the lead was created via Salesforce.)  By design, Marketo ONLY deduplicates leads if they were created via one of the methods listed below.
  1. Web form fillout
  2. Munchkin API
  3. Web service API
  4. List import
  5. Web service API - Import to list
NOTE: Marketo will accept duplicate leads from the API if the API call is to create the lead rather than update or create/update
