Marketo mapping to an activity versus using a point score

Can Marketo map based on an activity not using a point score (fill out form and download a whitepaper) to a specific Salesforce sales cycle stage? If so, what needs to be done in Marketo to do this? It would seem that there would be so many permutations of different activies that this would/may be cumbersome and/or time intensive to complete.

I'm not clear on the question.  Do you want to change the Salesforce sales cycle stage when an activity occurs that Marketo can see?  This can be done provided the field for your stage is editable within Marketo.

I have been asked to map to an activity - a contact downloading a whitepaper which would equal a qualified contact in salesforce.  There are two issues - yes you can set a smart campaign for this activity though you would need to do so for every activity that equals the same level of interest - multiple page visits, webinar attendance.  My sales group wants to have Marketo map to a sales stage using this versus a point score.  I think it is way too complicated do have this type of an approach.

You might also use the lead score with its current settings, and then trigger the change in sales stage based on the lead score. Depending on your current setup this would only be 1-2 additional campaigns.

Steven -If you are going to trigger the change in sales stage based on lead score - would this be more appropriately done in Salesforce or is there a way to trigger this in Marketo which would then map the sales stage to SF.  If the latter, can you provide detail on how to create the appropriate additional campaigns.

Suppose you have lead scoring set up, and you want stages for scores of 25, 50, and 100

Smart campaign 1: if score is changed and new score is between 25 and 50, change stage to x

Smart campaign 2: if score is changed and new score is between 50 and 100, change stage to y

Smart campaign 3: if score is changed and new score is over 100, change stage to z

Steven - thanks for the continued updates.  It would seem that all of this happens within Marketo.  What our team wants to do is have Marketo change the status within Salesforce.  Is what you propose in alignment with this?

You are also basing stage on points not an activity.  The sales group wants to have it around this: downloads whitepaper, attends webinar - not have points associated.

If you prefer not to use points, use the triggers for the activities instead of the triggers for the score change, but you may end up with more campaigns to create.

Steven - agreed - the number of campaigns would increase significantly due to the combinations that would equal the next set of sales stages.

Your help and guidance has been greatly appreciated.  Do you work with Marketo?

I work with Marketo clients to bridge the gap between what they want to do with marketing technology and what they can do with Marketo.

Glad I could help.

Steven - maybe you could offer a recommendation on another problem - see in Community - recent discussion on

Campaign lead scoring

I've modified my info to now include the web pages I want to include - wonder if this fixes my problem
