Auto-expand the navigation menu on Marketo ball hover.

Auto-expand the navigation menu on Marketo ball hover.

With the new look & feel rollout, it now takes me 2 clicks to navigate from one Marketo module to another. Somewhat frustrating.

If the Navigation menu would automatically expand when you hover your mouse over the Marketo ball, it would offer a better user experience IMO.

Hey Kyle, I agree completely! The shortcut keys (Alt/Opt + M, C, D, L, A) have been helpful for this, but if you want to open something in a new tab then you still need to click into the superball to get anywhere.

Exactly... if you use Marketo regularly you know the importance of operating in multiple tabs!

Perhaps Option+Shift+M could open in a new tab where Option + M opens in the existing tab...

Agreed! Navigating back to the superball, stopping to click, and waiting for the menu to populate is disrupting.

Yeah, this is the one aspect of the redesign that has me scratching my head. WHy bury the primary nav options?

Agreed. Not loving the superball implentation.

The SuperBall has many reasons behind it.
  1. We wanted to reclaim the vertical (valuable) space used by the nav.
  2. We needed to give access to MORE things, like SEO, Calendar, etc and there was no room in the nav
  3. Over time, we are blowing up the design studio, lead database, and analytics and making it more granular like just showing templates or just showing forms.  The nav was not the right UI for this kind of model.  This will be accompanyed by a new tree navigation. (2015 if all goes to plan)
  4. We have new properties showing up like RTP, SEO and others.  We wanted a way to make navigation consistent, even if the codebase was different.
The keyboard shortcuts should be used for speed, if you need.  However, your point about multiple tabs raises a question.  If you have multiple tabs open, why are you using the SuperBall at all?  Aren't you just switching between browser tabs?

I hope this helps explain the reasoning behind the ball.

Hi Glen,

Fair points. I do understand why you moved the nav to the SuperBall, just think it needs to be tweaked a bit. What are your thoughts on the original idea posted here (have the nav drop down on mouseover rather than on click)? I think that would eliminate the need for extra clicks and also help to "unhide" the navigation.

We actually had the hover working as well as click.  Then we saw a bug where if you hovered, and THEN clicked, it would get all confused.  It was really annoying, so we removed the hover and just had click.

With just hover (and not click), there would be a different problem of everytime you moused over it (by accident) the menu would come down.  It would be a different kind of annoying.

This is one of the reasons we added the keyboard shortcuts.

Let's give it a little while, it's brand new.  Let's see if it grows on you.  Imagine it's a new house in a new neighboorhood.  We don't need to move back to the old house, you will make new friends here.  I promise.

Glen- thanks for the feedback and insight into the thoughts behind the ball, it's much appreciated.

My main point is that it now takes more clicks to navigate around the system.
If you have multiple tabs open, why are you using the SuperBall at all? Aren't you just switching between browser tabs?
Browser shortcuts to switch between tabs are certainly useful, however it's the process of actually opening the multiple Marketo tabs in the first place which is slowing me down.  The SuperBall is necessary to open up the Design Studio when working on a Program in Marketing Activities, for example. Personally, I think it's essential to utilize multiple tabs to maximize your productivity & efficiency working in Marketo.

Perhaps a 1 second delayed hover could expand the SuperBall, so as to not accidentally expand the menu for those just grazing over the ball.

ps- when is the neighborhood block party??

The block party is our annual summit.  🙂

We will work on the nuances of the ball (hover/click/etc) but right now there are loose ends in calendar and the new look that need fixing.  Always little things that slip past QA.

I completely understand your point Kyle.  The option of additional keyboard shortcuts (for new tab) are possible.  I'll follow up on them.
