Responsive Design for Mobile Devices

Why hasn't Marketo updated its email forms for responsive design on a mobile device?!  Over half of our prospects live on their mobile devices and if there is any image or video embedded in the email, it looks god awful.  With over 80% of email users reading emails on their mobile devices, what is the ETA for this update?

Thanks!!

Re: Responsive Design for Mobile Devices

Wow - for some reason i thought it was about a FORM on a landing page. If you're talking about getting images / Videos in responsive emails. The best thing to do would be to set a max-width="400px" / class="max-width: 400px;"  (or whatever) Rather then declaring a set pixle width. That should make them size down for you. OR you could use @media Query  for your classes that will size it down per screen size. There's a few ways to do it. Although  when it comes to video. I would embed a link from youtube or something for that. Video in email gets a little tricky with email clients. I normaly take a screen shot / design a "cover image" for the video. Just for a clear CTA that looks good.

Here's a list of Marketos responsive tempaltes. Might be a good place to start http://templates.marketo.com/category/responsive-email/

Re: Responsive Design for Mobile Devices

Just use the embed code in your page. Will be responsive.

Here's a live example for you https://pages.mygenfcu.org/Event-Form.html that I setup.

Re: Responsive Design for Mobile Devices

Stephen, could you please expand on that?  What code do you embed?

I'm having trouble accessing your page, so I can't see your example.

Re: Responsive Design for Mobile Devices

Hey guys! Sorry I was MIA last few hours!

Once you create your form. Go to Form Actions (drop down menue) and click: Embed Code.

Copy and past that code into your responsive landing page Template and that should fix your problem. You can edit the code as needed for your design.

Re: Responsive Design for Mobile Devices

Stephen:
We don't have a problem with any landing pages.  What we have a problem with is the actual email not sizing correctly on a mobile device, specifically, a smart phone.  If you have any experience here, that would be greatly appreciated.

I have heard that this is a common issue for a lot of other people and I was wonder what Marketo was going to do to correct it and if there was any ETA for it.

Thanks!

Re: Responsive Design for Mobile Devices

Responsive emails are tricky and you will need someone with experience coding up html emails.  Using marketos email templates are a great starting point.   Another good source would be zurb to get some templates to build off.

http://zurb.com/ink/templates.php

Only native email applications will allow for responsive emails, all web clients take out any of the neccesary css to have be responsive.  Keep in mind email is like the internet circa 1995 so you can not do anything close to what you can do with a webpage.  Animated gifs would be a good alternative to video but even those have issues with outlook.  Forms in email may work in some clients but not in outlook and other major email clients

Stephen:

Thanks.  We'll give that a try and see.  (This has been driving my brand manager absolutely nuts!)  We don't embed the video, that was my error.  We do  a link in our emails to a YouTube channel.  Thanks for the link for the responsive templates.  I'll check those out as well.  It still would be very customer focused if Marketo updated their forms so it automatically did resize.  (Just a hint developer people!)

Re: Responsive Design for Mobile Devices

Penn, like you have pointed out, a major issue that all of our clients have is building responsive email templates. At Revenue Pulse have been building custom responsive templates for our clients for the past 2 years. We've built over 100 templates for various clients like Trend Micro, Amdocs and others.

However, we wanted to put the control back in the Marketers hand. Why should you have to spend thousands on every template, and wait for weeks while you go back and forth between designers and developers?

That's why we developed Knak.

Knak makes creating responsive Marketo email and landing pages, simple. Like most marketers, I do not know how to code, and I don't plan on learning. However, with Knak, I can quickly and easily create a responsive email or landing page template that is customized for my brand, with my colors, logos and social links, with no coding required.

These templates can then be put into Marketo, where they are fully editable in the Marketo editor. We have tested all our templates extensively in Litmus and Email on Acid, so you can be sure they will look perfect regardless of the device or email client.

We received great response from the Marketo community from pretty much every Marketer we showed this to over the last 3 days, and have almost 100 users using it to build their templates already.

I would encourage all of you to try it out today, for free, at www.knak.io - and let me know what you think!
