Smart Campaign Flow not working as anticipated Clicked link vs. Opened email

I am having trouble validating a flow process in a Smart Campaign based on clicked links versus opened emails. Here's my Smart List and Flow setup with expected outcome.

Test Scenario with expected results:
Email address 1: Open Email 1 and click link
Email address 2: Open Email 1 but do not click link
Email address 3: Do not open Email 1
Each email entered through Smart List, Person Attributes, Email Address Is

Email address 1 should receive Email 2
Email address 2 should receive Email 4
Email address 3 should receive Email 3

Flow:
Send Email
Email Sequence ID1

Wait
10 minutes

Send Email
Choice - Clicked Link In Email Is Email Sequence ID1
Email Sequence ID2

Wait
10 minutes

Send Email
Choice - Not Opened Email is Email Sequence ID1
Email Sequence ID3
Choice - Not Clicked Link is Email Sequence ID1
Email Sequence ID4
------------

What happens is, the Email Address 2 is receiving the Email Sequence ID2, even though that email should only be sent to the recipeint who clicks the URL link in Sequence ID1. The URL I'm using to test is a URL to google.com.

I'm using the same 3 email addresses to check the results and each email address has cliked the link in the Email Sequence ID1 at some point during my testing. Would that matter?

What should I do to create a flow that properly operates with clicked URLs vs. Opened Emails vs Not opened emails?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Smart Campaign Flow not working as anticipated Clicked link vs. Opened email

Hi Brian, what is the default for the first send choice? If it's not "do nothing" then that could be the problem. Also, as you suggested, if they've clicked in your testing it will still be in the history for the record. Since you can't put a time constraint in a choice, the record is saying that you've clicked before, which is why the flow is going through that way. You can either use a totally new record here, or you could try to trigger off of something different like "program status" but that would also require you to be using program statuses (a great practice, but might be more work to implement if you aren't already doing this).

Re: Smart Campaign Flow not working as anticipated Clicked link vs. Opened email

Hey Dory, thank you for the quick reply. The default is set to Do Nothing. Can I put a brand new URL in the Email 1 to test the Flow? Should I create a unique URL for testing this Flow that no recipeient has clicked in the past?

Edit: found the Record report under Analytics/Email Link Performance and it was showing the sum total (3) of each email i've been using to test this Flow.

Hey Brian, you can do a brand new URL that you haven't clicked through before, and that should work. By new record I was referring to a new email address that hasn't been tested before.

Ok, just tested this with 3 new email addresses and a new URL and it worked as expected. Thank you for your help, Dory.

No problem, Brian. One other thing to keep in mind, is that opens aren't always properly recorded in Marketo... this isn't really something that you can action, but I personally wouldn't tailor an email too much to whether or not someone has opened since I've found it to be an unreliable metric.
