Is there any way to make emails responsive and NOT use a Marketo template?

I created a responsive template, and when I put it into marketo using the blank template it strips out most of my styles - especially those that control the breaking points of the media queries.

So I pose this question:

Is there any way to make emails responsive and NOT use a Marketo template?

Thanks!

I don't think so. We had a collection of responsive templates designed for our company. While they appear to work fine on mobile devices, the layout gets messed up for those users who have modified their Windows scaling settings. After applying the fixes that have been identified to solve this issue, Marketo is stripping out all of the necessary code that we applied to our templates - including some of the conditional media queries. We had no idea this was going to happen after investing thousands of dollars to have responsive templates developed. We opened a ticket with support on this, but I'm sure they'll come back and say that this is expected behavior and not a bug.

I haven't looked closely at them, but Marketo has a responsive emails category on their templates site. Would be interesting to see how theirs are built, and what doesn't get changed in theirs, as opposed to what's happening to yours.

I've built a few simple templates with the Zurb Ink framework, and haven't seen many major issues yet - not to say I wont though. Also, I vaguely remember reading that was the same framework that Marketo was basing theirs on?

I can confirm that even the responsive templates that Marketo provides, suffers from the Windows scaling issue.  Below is an example of the "StoreForest-red-DarkFG-DarkBG-layout6" template:
  • Original preview
  • Outlook 2013: 1920x1080 screen resolution - with 100% scaling (no scaling)
  • Outlook 2013: 1920x1080 screen resolution - with 125% scaling

Not only are the columns being pushed to another row (which shouldn't happen here since the resolution has more than enough space to accomodate the full layout (unlike mobile), but notice the bottom footer in the 125% view.

As expected, here is the reply from Marketo when surfacing this issue with Support:
These 2 items are both expected behavior on our end.

For condition statements, you may vote the for the idea here as well as other places (there are many Ideas out there on this piece alone): https://community.marketo.com/MarketoIdeaDetail?id=08750000000J2oFAAS

Conditional statements are on our radar as of now. I don't have an ETA as to when this will be rolled out as an enhancement, but it should probably be within the next few releases.

For xml, I don't believe there is an Idea for this yet, however, please feel free to file one.
