Capturing results in Google Analytics of redirected Google Campaign URLs on Marketo landing pages

We had a partner send out an email on our behalf to their own mailing list. The email they sent included links to a Marketo landing page on our website:

http://info.neotechnology.com/0919-register.html

We wanted to track the click-throughs from our partner's email campaign using our own Google Analytics account, so we used Google Analytics Campaigns feature to create a unique tracking URL for the email's click-through link:

http://info.neotechnology.com/0919-register.html?utm_source=
infoq&utm_medium=emailwebinar&utm_content=learn&utm_campaign=dl

Our partner used their own email distribution system to send out the email, so the actual links that were visible in the email were redirected to the above Google Analytics tracking URL.

Unfortunately, Google Analytics did not capture any of these click-throughs to the Marketo landing page.

Can you please let us know if there was some other way we should have set up this campaign in order to be able to track these click-throughs in Google Analytics? We need to know if we should set up campaigns like this differently in the future.

Thanks.

You can always go to the landing page performance report in the Marketo Analytics tab, especially since it's a Marketo landing page.  Create a new report, just isolate it to the actual marketing landing page that you want to track.  Isolate the date of activity from when the email went out and whatever end date you want to track.  You should at least be able to see if there are any page views for the said landing page.

Re: Capturing results in Google Analytics of redirected Google Campaign URLs on Marketo landing pages

Hi Michelle, thanks for your response. I'm aware that I can track the response in Marketo, and the vendor who sent out the email on our behalf has also provided us with click-through reports, so I do have the results from other sources. I am hoping to be able to track this type of campaign in Google Analytics as well so that these types of results can roll up into the results of all the other campaigns we're doing with our partners (display ads, text links, etc.), which are being tracked in Google Analytics, and we would then have all the results in one place.

Do you know if that's doable?

Thanks.

Re: Capturing results in Google Analytics of redirected Google Campaign URLs on Marketo landing pages

Lori:

Hm. That should work. We use UTM parameters, and it works for us.

Reasons it might not be working:

  • Do you have GA cross-domain tracking set up correctly?
    • If you have tons of referrer websites as "info.neotechnology.com," it probably isn't set up right.
  • Did their email distribution system shorten the links and chop off the UTM codes?
    • Did you get sent an email? Click on their link, see if the final address contains the UTM parameters.
    • Do UTM parameters work in general on your landing pages? Try adding test parameters and seeing if they register in Google Analytics. Try clicking on this link, and then check the GA campaigns for "test" as a value.
  • Can you confirm that visits/engagement on the LP in question is being registered?
    • Has http://info.neotechnology.com/0919-register.html ever gotten visits according to Google Analytics? You could make an advanced segment in GA for "Has Visited 0919-register.html" to see.
That should be a good starting point to troubleshoot the problem. Let me know which one it is, I'm curious.

Hi Lori,

Yup try Edward's advice.  It should work.  I suggested the above just in case you can't access the stats from GA.

Re: Capturing results in Google Analytics of redirected Google Campaign URLs on Marketo landing pages

Thanks, Michelle and Edward, for your suggestions. Here is what I know so far (see comments in bold):

  • Do you have GA cross-domain tracking set up correctly? WE ARE INVESTIGATING
    • If you have tons of referrer websites as "info.neotechnology.com," it probably isn't set up right.
  • Did their email distribution system shorten the links and chop off the UTM codes? NO
    • Did you get sent an email? YES Click on their link, see if the final address contains the UTM parameters. IT DOES
    • Do UTM parameters work in general on your landing pages? Try adding test parameters and seeing if they register in Google Analytics. Try clicking on this link, and then check the GA campaigns for "test" as a value. THIS LINK DID NOT REGISTER IN GA, HOWEVER, THE EMAIL LINK WAS CAPTURED IN GA WHEN THE VENDOR TESTED THE EMAIL, WHICH LED ME TO THINK THERE WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE REDIRECT.
  • Can you confirm that visits/engagement on the LP in question is being registered?
    • Has http://info.neotechnology.com/0919-register.html ever gotten visits according to Google Analytics? You could make an advanced segment in GA for "Has Visited 0919-register.html" to see. I CHECKED, AND THIS PAGE DOES NOT SHOW UP IN GA. 😞
    • That should be a good starting point to troubleshoot the problem. Let me know which one it is, I'm curious. BASED ON THE ABOVE, IT SEEMS LIKELY THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE GA SET UP CORRECTLY TO TRACK HITS TO THIS LANDING PAGE. I'LL HAVE OUR WEB MANAGER INVESTIGATE. THANKS!
