Options for tracking homepage banner clicks using Marketo

Our homepage (www.nasuni.com) has rotating banners that for the most part, link to internal pages. In the past I have used google campaign codes to track specific clicks, but keeping track of the codes/coresponding banners in spreadsheets got to be annoying. It would also be great to tie it back to a cookied site visitor.

Is there a way to track clicks using Marketo? I poked around but couldn't really find a clear answer. Can someone point me to a resource? Thanks!

I use google utm_ codes for marketo tagging, as well, no reason not to have everything in both with the same parameter names.  Highly recommend.
If you do it right, you can set up your codes as campaign tokens, and then just tag all links as ?utm_source={{my.source}}&utm_campaign={{my.campaign}}&etc... and fairly easily achieve the best of both analytics worlds.

For measuring the effectiveness of things like banners do you guys have an in-page analytics tool? I really like Crazy Egg for stuff like this, but you don't get the integration with cookies.

If you have a designated page on your site that a visitor goes to from the banner, you could setup a program or marketing activity that listens for 'viewed web page'. For anyone that you already have cookied and in your DB, you would know if they click on it. I think you may also be able to see how many anonymous views as well, but that may require a little more digging.

Re: Options for tracking homepage banner clicks using Marketo

You also want to make sure you have the Munchkin code installed on every page of your website that you want to track!

How are people coming to your site? Are they being lead there from emails? Or is it just basic traffic?

If you're sending people to your site via emails, that's going to help with tracking as well because you'll already have their information in Marketo and by clicking through an email, the person's IP address is attached to their record.

If you're looking at just basic traffic, that is going to be an anonymous lead. By going into the Analytics tab and looking at the Web Page Activity Report you'll be able to get some general information. Like Pierce said, you'll want to set up Smart Lists that use "Visited Web Page" (not "viewed") and put in what particular pages you are looking for. If there is more than 1, use the green plus circle to put in as many as you want. However, pages won't show up if they don't have the Munchkin on them!

I hope this helps!

Oh yeah Crazy Egg. We are actually paying for that, but it isn't currently deployed properely. Should look into that.

The issue is we have links to the same internal pages from the top nav and in other places on the page, if it were dedicated we could make a listening activity.

Thanks for the feedback!

Re: Options for tracking homepage banner clicks using Marketo

Thanks Jaime, so we do have the tracking code set up. Some will be hitting the site through email, but many will be coming in through "organic" ways. What I want to track is specific clicks on a banner. The page linking from the banner is not a landing page, it's just a normal website page that can be navigated to through many other links on the homepage.

I guess what I'm envisioning is something similar to a google campaign code but something that can be appended to the link within Marketo. Does this exist?

Also, Louis, for the banner click issue, just set up a list for each banner ad where filter 'clicked link' is banner link x on your homepage url, that will show you your cookied leads by banner click okay.  You can set them to show just clicks of anon leads, as well.  It's not click counts, per se, but distinct leads clicking is a better count, i think.

Thanks. That's probably the best bet.
