Removing customers from email blasts

Does anyone have good suggestions on how to remove customers from email blasts in an automated way? Often times, we will obtain a list from an outside source and because the customer's organization names in the list doesn't match the name in our Salesforce system exactly, the account will recieve the email. Any ideas/suggestions would be great!!

Re: Removing customers from email blasts

We mark all of our customers as "Is Customer" in Marketo and then have suppression lists that prevent email matches from getting our lead/prospect emails.

Typically "acquired" lists have a domain column (or one can be created from the email address column) which is great for matching. You can create a filter on your campaign/or a suppression list that would compare your list of customer domains (will require manual updating of the list) and remove all leads with a matching domain.

This is not exactly what you're looking for but should help you get a little closer?

Kelly - are you looking to block people from existing accounts (in SFDC) from recieving a specific email blast if they're entered via this new list from outside source?

Yes, exactly.

Re: Removing customers from email blasts

This sounds snarky, but the best solution is to do a better job cleaning your data. Tools like DemandTools and PeopleImport have "fuzzy matching" for company names that does a decent job of deduping and cleaning data before it gets in to your system.

With Phil recently "blasting" email blasts and purchased lists, I know Marketo won't be coming out with features to make this any easier, so I would look elsewhere to help sanitize data. Just my 2c 🙂

Re: Removing customers from email blasts

Hmmm, that's interesting. I unfortunately don't see myself a way to do this in Marketo. But maybe there is a way to use SFDC to create some sort of list or queue that can be leveraged? I don't work a lot on that side of things, so will leave it to someone more experienced with that to pipe in. Sorry!

Re: Removing customers from email blasts

Great tip Jeff. We use a similar campaign to block competitors after form submissions, but like you said this requires us to manually add domains as the filter.

For us we use a triggered campaign with "LEAD IS CREATED" as the trigger and "Email address contains" + our list of competitor domains (Kelly, in this case could be your known list of clients' domains), and then we BLACKLIST = TRUE as the flow.

You could do the same but maybe in the flow you would just marketing suspend.
