How do I segment one email list so I can send it with 3 different subject lines?

I have a list of 10,000 emails that I want to schedule for Saturday. We are unsure of the best subject line so we would like to do A/B testing and send 3 different subjects splitting the list into 3. How do I set this up?

Erica, what I have generally done is to generate my test list, and then create three seperate mailers mailers, coding them with the extension T1, T2, and T3.

If you're just starting with Marketo, I STRONGLY recommend you adopt a naming convention. Ours goes like this Asset Type_Target Group_Test Number or EM_C-Level_T1.

This works well for us, and allows you to track different subject lines across different groups. (For example, you track performance of subject lines across different groups, such as C-Levels, Managers, etc....)

This works for us, but if anyone else has a more efficent method I am all ears.

Re: How do I segment one email list so I can send it with 3 different subject lines?

Are you looking for three email blasts by subject line and list segmented and how to do that?

If I understand that right then create three Marketo Programs ( use your naming conventions) to include your smart campaigns [smart list , workflow and digital assets ( in your case will be email copy)] .

At the program level, you can measure the response to compare your subject line performance. You can go further and create campaigns within Salesforce to add members in the campaigns if necessary.

Hope this helps and answer's your question!

Re: How do I segment one email list so I can send it with 3 different subject lines?

Hi Erica,

There are a couple of ways to accomplish this:

1) You can follow Milind's and Keith's advice and do three different emails (however, you do not need three different programs, just three campaigns) and set up three different campaigns. First, divide your list (if you want it random, just send one email to the people with names A-H, then H-P, then P-Z or however. Set up your campaigns using "member of list" for the SmartList and then send email in the Flow step to run as a batch campaign.

2) Pull the whole list into Marketo, use one campaign and three emails - Again, use the "member of list" filter and just select your one list. Then, in the Flow, put the "send email" action and use 3 choices. The first will be "If: Random Sample is 33" then "send email T1. The second if is, again, "If: Random Sample is 33" send email T3. This Help Article explains it step by step and with screen shots.

Either method will work fine, it just really depends on which you prefer. I tend to go with the second method because I think it gives a better view of the emails stats so that I can compare trends more easily in the "email" tab in Marketing Activities.

Hope this helps!!

Thanks Erica,

That was one point I forgot! I send all of the mails in one program, in one test campaign (or more than one campaign as we usually do two rounds of testing.)
