How do I import conference list into a program without having those leads sync into SFDC?

I have a conference list that I can use for 2 pre-conference email blasts but I CAN NOT add the leads to my own database (Salesforce) - 2 time usage. I guess the real quesiton is, what list import mode do I need to use to make this happen? Is it even possible or is it the 'norm'? Just want to be sure before I go importing and have to revert a bunch of changes.

Thanks,

You always have the option to keep Leads in Marketo without them being synced to SFDC. The wrinkle in this is if the Leads you are importing qualify for any Triggered or Scheduled Batch campaigns. Those campaigns will run like normal and can potentially sync to SFDC if that is a flow step. One idea is to create a Trigger campaign to watch the list, meaning if anyone in that list is synced to SFDC, then in the Flow Steps, use the Delete Lead from SFDC flow step to immediately remove them from the database.

Sam,

I'd make sure your lead MQL flow excludes this list initialy. If a lead from the List matches existing leads, then you can legitimately do what you want with that lead.

So if you only upload your list, send out your email, and then delete those records immediately you would be fine.

Usually I recommend adding that list to a suppression list or Suspending them until you plan to use them again.

Just make sure you know the response rates, etc before you remove the non responders from your database.

You can keep them in your database if they respond, right?  I'd review whether any of these are already in your database so you're not taking too drastic of steps in suppressing the list.

Yes, if they're already in our database or if they respond we can continue marketing to them. Generally I do all list importing through SFDC so I was thinking that my leads would automatically flow over, but they won't (unless they already exist). Generally I only sync leads from Marketo to salesforce if they fill out a form, so if I import this list into a marketo program none of 'new' leads should sync unless they perform some action after the fact. I can then remove any leads (or suppress/suspend) that haven't responded after the conference. Does that sound about right? Thanks for all the great responses.

Just to be sure, you might create an exception smart list with the following criteria:

  • Original source is this list
  • Synced to SFDC
  • Did not fill out form

I'd also set up a smart list with this criteria:

  • Original source is this list
  • Synced to SFDC
  • Was sent more than two emails
These lists help a lot to monitor for errors.  You might even set up an alert to notify you if someone matches this criteria.
